When your décor starts to lose the spark it once had, it’s time to consider a redesign. If you’re wondering where to start, we’ve got your back. Here are the best interior design trends coming up in 2024 so you can get ahead of the curve!
What’s In:
While there’s nothing wrong with going your own way and not worrying about the tides of trendiness, many of us find joy in coming up with new ways to improve our space using trends for inspiration.
We all need a change from time to time, so here are our suggestions for trends to try in the coming year.
Nature and Plants
There has been a recent cultural shift toward a return to nature. We’re embracing everything from buying more houseplants to dabbling in homesteading with personal gardens, beekeeping, and chicken coops.
With this societal desire to be surrounded by nature comes gorgeous greens, leaf-patterned textiles, houseplants, moss balls, and more. Whether you add a few succulents to accent your shelves or build your own personal jungle in your sunroom, this trend is guaranteed to bring some life to your space. Just remember to water the real ones!
Don’t have a green thumb? Not to worry—you can still get in on the fun with realistic fake plants, green walls (sage green, earthy greens, and emerald green), or pillows and other décor printed with nature-inspired patterns.
Important note: If you have pets, make absolutely sure that the plants you bring home are not toxic for them if ingested.
Unique and Eclectic Pieces
We’ve noticed a growing trend of people wanting to be more free with their spaces. This means trading out safe and understated pieces others may prefer for bold pieces that instead showcase your unique taste. After all, your home is meant for you to live in, not your guests.
Add some personality to your home with heirloom antiques, DIY pieces with your own personal touches, commissioned art, upcycled/repainted furniture, and other one-of-a-kind pieces that speak to you. Not everything has to be functional to be valuable—its purpose is to bring you joy!
Of course, while we encourage free expression, we also suggest having kind of overall theme and color palette to tie everything together. That’s what really makes this trend work, aesthetically speaking.
Bold Colors
Alongside the trend of freer self-expression, there has been a recent rise in adding more color to living spaces. While neutrals, whites, and grays can be easier to match and style, color has the power to create the perfect vibe for every room.
Each color has a different effect on our psyche. For example, blues are calming, oranges are energizing, and greens are hopeful and comforting. Neutrals are just . . . well, neutral. If you want to give your home a burst of life, energy, and harmony, give bold colors a try.
If you’re worried about jumping in full force, try adding accent colors to your space with pillows and décor and experimenting with the right hues and tones.
Here are a few of our favorite trending colors:
- Burnt Orange/Terracotta/Sienna (especially paired with sage green)
- Mustard Yellow/Ochre
- Sunshine Yellow
- Sage Green (especially paired with orange tones)
- Emerald Green
- Earthy Greens
- Robin’s Egg Blue
- Royal Blue
- Navy
- Shades of Pink
Warm Neutrals
If bright colors overwhelm you or just aren’t your taste, don’t worry! You can still keep up with the newest trends in 2024 with warm neutrals.
Cool neutrals are on their way out, as they’ve become associated with cold and sterile spaces. No one wants their home to feel like a doctor’s office. This doesn’t mean cool neutrals can’t be restyled with pops of color, but it does mean warm-toned neutrals are the way to go.
These tones will create a cozier and more welcoming feel. We recommend also using warm-toned lightbulbs for the best ambiance. If you’re also thinking about bringing in some plants, warm neutrals make a lovely complement to shades of green.
Upcycled and Sustainable Pieces
We just love taking something outdated and turning it into a modern marvel. With a fresh coat of paint, the right surrounding décor, and the perfect placement, you can give your antique pieces new life.
Upcycled pieces can give your home a warm and lived-in feel that’s still chic and modern. We especially love upcycled furniture mixed with a modernized retro, art deco, or bohemian vibe. Upcycling also means preventing more junk from ending up in landfills. It’s a win-win!
Speaking of which, along with the bio movement, there has also been a push for eco-friendly and sustainable décor. This means buying products that are made with sustainably sourced materials like real wood or bamboo, organic textiles, natural dyes, vinyl, and byproduct/ethical leather.
What’s Out:
Now for the painful part—what’s out. Keep in mind that even if you based your interior design around the following trends, that doesn’t mean your home is automatically outdated. Depending on your unique taste and interior design skills, you may not need to change a thing.
But for those who know their home is in dire need of an update, here are the things to look out for.
Gray, White, and Beige
You may be surprised to hear that your neutrals are in jeopardy. Gray, in particular, has reigned king over interior design for decades now. Even some new-build homes still come ready to go with gray walls and finishes.
While we admit that neutrals are certainly the safer and easier option, they’re hardly the most exciting. In recent years, they’ve taken on a bad rap for being sterile and impersonal.
We get it—you don’t want to paint over everything when you move. But you don’t have to go painting your walls neon pink to make a statement. If you prefer the ease of a neutral base, we recommend warmer neutrals with touches of color as accents.
If you’re willing to go a step further, a statement couch or new bed spread in bold colors can work wonders for refreshing your living spaces. Throw a few accent pillows and blankets over your chairs, roll out a colorful area rug, find some framed art to tie in your color palette, and voila! You’ve got a livelier space with minimal effort, and you get to keep your neutral walls.
Minimalism
This is another trend we thought would never go away. When we think of the future, we often think of a minimalist aesthetic. But, as always, the trends are taking a hard left onto a new path.
Minimalism, once seen as a way to create a calm and clean environment, is now thought of as being boring or lacking personality and imagination. Of course, you can still refresh a minimalist space and keep it simple with some color and perhaps a few houseplants.
However, many are getting rid of the idea of having a perfectly clean and empty space altogether, in favor of filling their homes with all manner of art, trinkets, decorations, bookshelves, and anything else that brings them joy.
Many on social media are calling this new trend “maximalism” or “eclecticism.” The best examples of these spaces include an overall color palette to tie everything together and create a specific feel. This helps your eyes to adjust to everything that’s going on in the room without overwhelming you.
We hope these ideas have inspired you with a new vision for your home. Let us know which trend you like best, or which one you don’t want to say goodbye to!
